Pre & Post Dance Warm up
Warming up with dynamic movement and stretches is one of the most effective ways of avoiding injury in any activity, especially dance. Often, our dance classes do a warmup that involves dynamic movement. Still, the standard routine is to simply begin static stretching and then begin class. Then, after dance classes are over and students have done their proper révérence, everyone leaves class.
WARNING!
Unpopular Opinion!
Dancers should do their dynamic stretches before class and static stretching after class! Here is why.
Dynamic stretching is important before dancing because it prepares your body for physical activity by:
· increasing blood flow
· improving range of motion
· enhancing muscle activation and coordination.
This can lead to improved performance and reduced risk of injury.
Static stretching after dance class or rehearsal can:
· improve flexibility.
· improve range of motion.
· reduce muscle soreness and stiffness.
· promote relaxation.
It can also aid in muscle recovery by increasing blood flow to the muscles.
The more our dancers understand what it takes for the muscles and joints to work at their highest level, the more they may be willing to put in the extra work for the sake of the performance and Building Longevity in their Art to stay in the game longer and healthier for years to come.
